Vol 44: Issue 5 (January 2023)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to our first blog of the year!

2023 is indeed in full swing here at ACA.

Take a first new year’s walk down memory lane with us,

as we bring you all the fresh highlights from JANUARY

Happy New Year, and WELCOME to Semester II!

We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to bringing you more from life at ACA. Make sure you scroll all the way down to the end for our all-inclusive new year’s recap in our January 2023 issue. There is something for everyone! Here are some of this month’s highlights:

ACA’S INTERNATIONAL FLAG DAY

Friday, January 20, 2023

ACA’s Flag Ceremony, with the theme "Ask of Me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance" featured  a parade of 17 selected students, dressed in their cultural attire, carrying the flag of his/her country. Students and staff honored each nation, standing in silence while a brief portion of each national anthem was played.

The 17 flags representing ACA students’ nationalities for the 2022-2023 year (Nigeria, Ghana, India, Lebanon, Syria, Venezuela, Russia, Italy, Kenya, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Pakistan, China, United Kingdom, and the United States of America) are now waving proudly above JC Hall.

ACA has welcomed students from over 60 nations in just over 30 years (since 1991).

MLK DAY

Monday, January 16, 2023

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (US) is celebrated on the third Monday in January to honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. Students from Preschool through High School gathered during their different assemblies to learn from the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968), a man of faith, courage and love, and indeed one of the world’s greatest heroes who suffered greatly, fought oppression, and won freedom through non-violent resistance.

PRESCHOOL

As we welcomed our young Preschoolers into the new year and back to school, one of our major highlights was our ACA League of Nations Flag Ceremony. Here are some of our younger Preschoolers (CRÈCHE, PRE-NURSERY & NURSERY) all dressed up in their cultural attire!

Meanwhile, let’s take a walk back to our classrooms (indoors and outdoors) to see what some of our older Preschoolers were up to this month…

NURSERY Planting Activities: Students learned about the needs of plants

PRE-K Show & Tell: “Sharing is Caring”

PRE-K Literacy: Learning 3-letter words in the “at” word family

PRE-K Mystery Reader: Ms. Abbie was our mystery reader this month!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Our Elementary Schoolers were not left out of our ACA League of Nations Flag Ceremony celebrations. We caught a few on the playground, all dressed up in their cultural attire:

Meanwhile, in our classrooms, our students rang in the new year with different activities, before settling in to another month of learning at ACA. Here’s a spotlight on our First Graders, who are halfway through their first year of Elementary School!

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

1ST GRADE Art: “Happy New Year!”

1st Grade kicked off 2023 with some new year’s art – handmade masks and crowns!

1ST GRADE Science: Movement

First Graders had a fun time playing in pairs with foil as golf balls and straws as golf clubs. The students were then divided into groups where they created their model design of a golf course, club and ball, as well as the entry point for easy movement of the ball… Can we pause for a moment and give a round of applause for our young engineers here?! WOW!

Continuing their lesson on movement, students and teacher moved around the court learning and demonstrating different forms of movement: round, straight, spiral and zig-zag.

1ST GRADE Math: Counting in 10’s and Rounding Numbers Up/Down

Our young mathematicians jumped over the number line, counting down and up in 10’s. They then learned how to round up numbers.

Our lesson continued with a math game of Scoot! The students rounded up numbers to the nearest tens using their scoot cards.

1ST GRADE Star of the Week

Every week, the star of the week gets a special treat! Here are a few highlights from last month’s special: lunch with mom and reading/storytelling!

2ND GRADE Science: Matter (Physical vs. Chemical Changes)

Second Graders learned to distinguish between physical and chemical changes in this physical science lesson on ‘matter’. The change from flour, sugar and yeast to these donuts was one that could not be reversed. So… “Donuts for everyone!”

3RD GRADE Science: Motion & Electricity

In this month’s Science lesson, we have been learning all about different types of motion, such as circular, angular, and periodic motion. And what better way to demonstrate than outdoors!

Third Graders then learned about static electricity and experimented using balloons, wool and hair to display static electricity. The students went on to experiment with circuits.

4TH GRADE Science: Potential and Kinetic Energy

It’s a science lesson in the playground (what?!) Fourth Graders learned about kinetic and potential energy on slides, swings, and anything else they could find around them on the playground. Some of us grown-ups might not mind shrinking for a day just to experience science class (and more!) at ACA. Does anyone remember their “Elementary School” classes being this fun and engaging? We are happy to see just how much our students are learning in this way, and their immediate practical applications to real-world scenarios.

4TH GRADE Field Trip: UI Zoological Garden

4TH GRADE Science Experiment: “Which materials keep water hot longer?”

5TH GRADE Science Experiment:

MIDDLE SCHOOL

7TH GRADE Chemistry Experiment

Students learned how to safely and accurately use different experimental techniques, apparatus and materials. This will aid their ability to plan experiments and investigations. We conducted various separation techniques and tests to carry out a wide range of qualitative analyses.

7TH GRADE Design & Technology (DT)

7th Graders made boxes from strawboard

8TH GRADE Art

Art students were introduced to drawing in the style of Charles Bargue through imitation.

HIGH SCHOOL

9TH GRADE Independent Project (IP)

Our student-led IP’s are in full-swing! Here, two high schoolers repaint the playground treehouse for our younger ACA family to enjoy. Stay tuned for more awesome IP features in our next blog!

11TH–12TH GRADE Entrepreneurship

As part of our 11th–12th Grade pre-university program, social science courses prepare students for independent research work and methods in their undergraduate studies and beyond. For her preliminary dissertation review, Ninma (12th Grade) presented her findings on her selected research project so far – “Racism in the Workplace: A Study of How Racism Affects Employee Productivity and Business in the USA”. We are so proud of her growth so far and look forward to her final dissertation next month!

11TH–12TH GRADE Art: Drawing like Charles Bargue

11TH–12TH GRADE Music Appreciation

“A HAPPY CHRISTMAS”

Welcome to our Christmas / End-of-Year Recap as we step into 2023!

Take a walk down memory lane with us,

and enjoy a front-row seat to “Christmas at ACA” last DECEMBER

Here’s to a joy-filled new year!

“JOY!” – An ACA Christmas

VIDEO PREMIERES on February 1, 2023 @ 8:00pm WAT

YouTube Channel – American Christian Academy:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC2Q3kqkM-QVAHMZR-GbF3Q

Join us as we recap on Christmas at ACA over the past 2 years in this 10-minute video: "JOY!" — An ACA Christmas. As we learn the true meaning of Christmas, we experience the joy of giving ourselves to our community through song, service, spending time together, sharing our gifts and talents, and more!

From caroling at the Christian Mission School for the Deaf, Ibadan Motherless Babies Home and ACA's Preschool courtyard last year, to our All-School Christmas Concerts this year, Preschool Santa's Grotto, surprise visits from the SBG Elves and everything in between, we're spreading JOY all-round into the new year! We hope that the hope, joy and peace that Christmas brings radiates throughout the year.

Special Thanks to the Christian Mission for the Deaf (Ibadan), Ibadan Motherless Babies Home, and our entire staff & student family at ACA.

"Read More" in the YouTube description @ American Christian Academy, and keep scrolling for more of our Christmas 2022 recap!

But before we walk you through our Christmas highlights, let’s take you back to the first weekend of the month of December at ACA, with this Special Feature from one of our very own… After kicking off the school year with Architect Malik Melli (Class of 2016) completing his first full design and supervision project for ACA’s new Middle–High School Block, we were very happy to end 2022 hosting Artist (and Engineer!) Nelson Afolabi Akinruntan (Class of 2015)’s very first Art Exhibition! Scroll through for our blog’s first Alumni Feature!

ALUMNI

“SHOWING OFF” – A Collection of Artwork by [Nelson] Afolabi Akinruntan

December 3, 2022

(A Word from Nelson — ACA’s Class of 2015)

"My name is Nelson Afolabi Akinruntan. I am an alumnus of the class of 2015 (ACA's best class). I personally think they should dub me 'Mr. ACA' – why? Because I'm one of the very few that started at Crèche and stayed up until Grade 12. My loyalty to ACA is why it was important for me to have my first exhibition where it all started - the ACA grounds.

During my time at ACA, I enjoyed most of my classes, playing sports, the social life and more. We always had a nurturing student-teacher environment that made classes enjoyable, and the great oral and written skills I picked up made it easy for me to settle in as an international student at Bowling Green State University (Ohio USA), where I studied Electronics and Computer Engineering. But as Art was one of the 3 subjects I loved most at ACA, I took my passion for drawing along with me and continued to develop my skills as a hobby and an escape.

After returning to Nigeria in 2021, the stress of a 9-to-5 Engineering job led me back to painting as a release. As people started to inquire and buy some of my art, I considered dipping my feet almost full time into painting. Now in Abuja (and the MD of the Febson group), I continue to enjoy painting and take every free time I get to work on the ideas I have."

“HAPPY THANKSGIVING!”

Welcome to our Thanksgiving Month Recap

Let’s take a walk down memory lane,

as we give you a rundown of our activities this NOVEMBER

Thanksgiving Celebration

Celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November (US)

Friday, November 25, 2022

“Thanksgiving day in JC hall, join & sing this angel song

The brightness of His glory spreading to ya

Heaven and earth proclaim His praise,

Little children, arms are raised

O none can stop the shouts of Hallelujah!”

– from ACA’s Hallelujah © 2021

*** SCROLL DOWN TO THE END OF THIS BLOG POST ***

…for our very special “Thanksgiving Concert” Gallery Feature!

But BEFORE you do, join us as we look back on our Thanksgiving Month…

It has indeed been a month of Thanksgiving! Over the past month, our ACA Family reminded ourselves of all we have to be thankful for, as we asked our students, “What are you thankful for?”

Here are some of our favorite responses from each class:

1st Grade: “God made earth, all of us and gave himself to us.”

2nd Grade: “Our powerful God, peaceful homes, pretty teachers,... YAY!!”

3rd Grade: “For our family, friends, shelter & food – we’re thankful!”

4th Grade: “Family, the life we have, and friends all around.”

5th Grade: “Chips, everyone in our lives, and God's plan for us!”

6th Grade: “There are 8 billion people but God cares for all.”

7th Grade: “God’s love for us, soccer and the world cup!”

8th Grade: “Give thanks to the Lord for His eternal nature.”

9th Grade: “We get to hear His Word everyday at school”

10th Grade: “We are loved and held by family and friends.”

11th Grade: “We are thankful for diversity of cultures at ACA.”

12th Grade: “The gratuity in our hearts runs deep for life.”

Indeed, we have so much to be thankful for! And in 12 different languages celebrating our diversity at ACA, student representatives from each grade responded in Thanksgiving to God, “His love endures forever!”

World Children’s Day

Celebrated worldwide on November 20

Friday, November 18, 2022

“We are THANKFUL for diversity of cultures at ACA!”

In honor of World Children's Day this November, we looked back on our opening performance from last year's Thanksgiving Concert with our Preschool Dance Club “He Reigns”, as our older students in Elementary, Middle, and High School dressed up in their different cultural attire to celebrate!

The theme for this year's World Children's Day (celebrated on November 20) is "Inclusion, for Every Child", and this aligns with our Core Value #1 here at ACA, that "Every Child is made in the Image of God and is therefore of Inestimable Worth". We have welcomed children from almost 60 different nations over the past 30 years and celebrate all our different cultures and backgrounds.

PRESCHOOL: Join our Preschoolers as they wave their flags and dance in glory to God, in this special feature from last year’s Thanksgiving Celebration!
"It's every tribe, every tongue, every nation
A love song born of a grateful choir...”

ELEMENTARY – HIGH SCHOOL: Our SBG (Student Body Government) encouraged students to come dressed in their best cultural attire, as they put on an awesome afternoon celebrating World Children’s Day together. We absolutely LOVE the beauty in diversity that we saw! Here’s a little snippet we’d like to call “Faces of ACA”:

These photos were taken and edited in collaboration with an ongoing Independent Project (IP) by Ifeoluwa Ajayi-Obe (9th Grade), celebrating ACA’s cultures. We look forward to seeing his completed work!

Class Photos: We couldn’t miss the opportunity to make a few stops in our classrooms for some group photos!

Event Highlights: Our SBG put on a well-planned afternoon of traditional foods, performances and more! We’re throwing our hats off to our student leaders for a job well done!

Parent–Teacher Conferences (PTC)

Health & Career Talks

We extend our gratitude to our ACA parents, Dr. Kuti for a very insightful health talk given to staff on ‘Hypertension’, and to Mr. Akarah for a timely and engaging career talk given to High School students.

This very creative and functional design features a comfortable leather-like covering and cushioning that supports both upright and partial recline seating positions, a space for his stack of books, a fixed tabletop for working, and a convertible worktop that doubles as an inclined drawing board.

9TH GRADE Art: Classical Cast Drawings

GIS (GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS) DAY: Field Trip & Event

High School Geography students attended the annual GIS Day event. It was an educational experience for most of the students, and they were excited to participate in the various activities which highlighted the conservation of biodiversity in Nigeria. The program was featured in a news article by EnviroNews Nigeria, with a cover photo and words from one of our ACA students, Ifeoluwa Ajayi-Obe, noting that the event was an eye-opener and promising to conserve the natural world. The institution, in partnership with GIS Konsult launched the A-B-C (Agro-Biodiversity Conservation) project, and an open invitation was extended to ACA for further collaborations with the Nigerian Society for Conservation Biology.

Fire Drill & Assembly

Friday, October 21, 2022

The procedure for ACA's 2022-2023 Quarter I Fire Drill held on October 21, 2022, was smooth and successful. From Preschool through High School and all members of staff, this bi-annual exercise recorded an evacuation time of 9 minutes and 37 seconds.

During the week leading up to our Fire Drill, we held Assemblies all across school to go over our procedures. Our First Graders demonstrated a wonderful skit on fire safety and procedures:

Monthly Class Features

“WELCOME to Our Classrooms!”

PRESCHOOL

CRÈCHE: Learning through Play!

NURSERY: Learning the Word “UP” and Things that FLY

Nursery students had fun learning the word “UP” while playing with balloons. After learning about things that move “up”, our young explorers made paper planes to fly outdoors as they learned about the airplane as a means of transportation.

PRE-KG PE: Learning to MOVE our Bodies!

KG Art: Learning to use our Scissors (safely!)

Our “Busy Bees” from Pre-K and KG had fun learning the proper technique of using scissors safely during their art classes.

KG Science & Literacy: Learning about our World

Early birds kindergartners worked together to fix a solar system puzzle. A week later, they learned about clouds and forms as they stepped outside their classroom for an outdoor cloud observation class. We continued with our “Earth” theme as a kindergartener played a noun “globetrotter” game with her teacher to name people, places, animals, and things on the globe.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

1ST GRADE Literacy: “Word Work”

First Graders were introduced to a fun new literacy activity this week as part of their ‘Daily 5’ – WORD WORK! They were guided through different tasks, identifying the tools they need, getting their tools quickly and quietly, finding the right focused environment, and getting to work! We are looking forward to their journey of learning to be able to spell, read and write independently, as they have fun with rainbow writing, ghost writing and more.

1ST GRADE Math: “Group Work”

Our young mathematicians worked in groups as they learned about grouping numbers into Hundreds, Tens and Ones.

2ND GRADE Science: Plant Experiment

What happens when one plant is exposed to sunlight and the other is not? Which one survives? Let’s find out!

2ND GRADE Math: “Ordered Pairs”

2nd Graders learned about “Ordered Pairs” in Math using GRIDS.

3RD GRADE Literacy: Dictionary Skills

In this month’s literacy class, 3rd Graders practised their dictionary skills. We’re excited for all the new words they’ll learn!

Lower Elementary (1ST – 3RD GRADE): Super Improvers Reward Games Session!

CONGRATULATIONS to all our “Super Improvers!”

4TH GRADE Science: Yeast Experiment

Our 4th Grader scientists conducted a series of experiments to determine whether yeast is a living thing.

4TH GRADE Music: “Music Notation” (iPad Learning)

It’s always fun with a game of Kahoot! We’re testing our knowledge and speed in music notation and note identification. Who’s heading for the top of the leaderboard next?! As iPads were introduced into our Upper Elementary classrooms starting with 4th Grade last year, we have seen countless benefits. In music class, we are keeping up with the times, and music learning is made more engaging and fun.

5TH GRADE Social Studies: The Beginning of Civilization (interactive iPad activity)

5th Grade students wrote about the beginning of civilization in Mesopotamia and later answered a quiz on their iPads. Our iPad pilot program extended from 4th Grade to 5th Grade this academic year, and with the incorporation of technology into our 21st century classrooms, we have seen students able to learn independently at their own pace, allowing for new discoveries in a secure and controlled environment, while teachers enjoy better classroom management. We love seeing our students empowered to use technology in educative and enriching ways.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

6TH GRADE Art: “Owls like Paul Klee”

The ART and the PROCESS! 6th Graders drew and colored their beautiful owls in the style of Swiss-German artist, Paul Klee, known for his inventive canvases and his original approach to painting, often exploring color theory, form and design theory, abstraction and more.

8TH GRADE Music: Theory and History of Music

Our young musicians have been learning a lot about music history and music theory this past month, advancing to reading and writing notes on ledger lines with ease, and identifying styles and periods in music.

8TH GRADE DT: Building a BRIDGE!

8th Grade Design & Technology (DT) students learned a little about structure, materials, and the process of construction as they built a bridge with straw and strawboard.

HIGH SCHOOL

9TH GRADE Geography: Student Projects

Our students have been learning a lot in their physical geography modules, from the earth’s surface to its atmosphere, and all the processes involved in landform formation, cloud formation and rain, different types of clouds, weather instruments and much more!

This month’s student projects feature:

1. Diagrammatic Explanation of Cloud Formation, 2. Types of High, Middle and Low Clouds, 3. Composite Volcano, 4. Shield Volcano 5. Weather Radar 6. Wind Vane

11TH GRADE English: Presentations on Famous Speeches

This week’s lesson was titled “Identifying Rhetorical Situations”. Students researched and selected excerpts from famous speeches and gave their presentations in class.

11TH GRADE (UK Track) Physics: AS Physics Experiment

12TH GRADE (US Track) Entrepreneurship: ”Idea vs Opportunity”

This week’s student presentation was on Idea vs. Opportunity, dwelling on the significance of having idea generation before opportunity recognition.

11TH – 12TH Grade PE: Basketball

…because what’s a day without some physical activity or a good sport? It’s all a part of well-rounded education and holistic wellness at ACA and beyond.

WELCOME to the 2022–2023 Academic Year!

As your family school, ACA is committed to providing an excellent academic and nurturing environment for our students to THRIVE. This was our word for the academic year, as our staff embraced the theme, “nourish to flourish”

ACA remains committed to Truth, the self-expression of God and a firm pedestal for our school community to collaborate in excellence.

“Every Child in the Image of God…”

"Every Child is made in the Image of God
...and is therefore of Inestimable Worth"

At ACA, we believe this wholeheartedly as our "Core Value #1". Our teachers are dedicated to giving every child the love, attention, education, and nourishment they need at each stage to thrive, and we believe in the importance of knowing each child by name, serving, and catering to their needs, while raising them (with increasing independence) to become responsible adults.

Pictured above, is our Early Childhood Coordinator, Ms. Tosin, with our youngest member of the ACA Family, our newest Crèche “student” (all settled in on her first day of school!)

“ACA offers services from Crèche through 12th Grade (including boarding for older students), with special US track (AP) and UK track (AS/AL) high school programs. ACA offers two new International Programs at the 11th/12th grade level: International Degree Foundation Program (IDFP) and Medical Pathway Foundation Program, as well as Dual Enrolment Explorer Program (Marquette University) both offering direct entry through partnerships with various universities across the world.”

WELCOME to our Monthly Blog!

Scroll through for an insight into life at ACA, get a glimpse into your child’s day with us, and learn more about who we are as we look back on our “Back-to-School” month of September.

Back to School!

We celebrated the beginning of the 2022 – 2023 academic year with one of our most celebrated performances from the past school year:

“BACK TO THE BEGINNING”

For us at ACA this year, it is a year to THRIVE and FLOURISH, just as in the Garden of Eden. Join our children as they discover a time machine, and embark on an unplanned musical adventure traveling through time to find their lost friends in the Garden of Eden. On their journey, they learn about the story of Creation and discover a message of God's love, hope and redemption.

WELCOME Back to School!

Let’s take a walk down memory lane,

as we give you a rundown of our back-to-school activities this past month…

Orientation Day for NEW Families!

Tuesday 6th September, 2022

After prepping our staff to give the very best to our students, we kicked off our welcome week activities with a warm “WELCOME!” to our new students and parents! We loved sharing what we’re all about at ACA, as we are committed to love, excellence, and nurture as we cater to your child’s educational and life needs. Our school policies, procedures and programs are available in our parents–students handbook, and we are looking forward to involving our new parents in all aspects of their child’s life and growth at ACA.

Our new students got to meet their teachers and play fun games, as current ACA students took their new classmates around the school. We are always happy to see the whole family!

Here are a few snapshots:

Meet ACA’s New Students:

“Welcome to our ACA Family!”

Opening Assembly

First Day of School!

Wednesday 7th September, 2022

Our different schools had a fun and engaging time gathering together and getting to know one another, playing interactive games, and learning about what’s in store for the new school year.

Back-to-School Nite

At ACA, we always look forward to our tradition of welcoming students and parents back with a fun “Back to School Nite”. Due to increased enrollment this year, we were excited to have not just one, but TWO back-to-school events! Parents got to meet teachers one-on-one and got a glimpse into a day in their child’s life, as students enjoyed sports, games, music and outdoor fun. We all enjoyed taking a look at student artwork, refreshments (including a suya special!) and live music, as our middle schoolers auditioned for the Senior Musical Performance Club.

Our interactive map and guided tours gave our ACA community a look into our Preschool spaces, Elementary classrooms, brand new Middle School building and classrooms, High School labs, and Wellspring Suites for Boarding, as parents and students stopped to sign up for clubs and get their new uniforms.

Lastly, we upheld our commitment to parental involvement through interactive Q-and-A sessions, in-depth presentations on school policies, new projects & programs (including our brand new Middle School program; the iPad project in Upper Elementary, with new interactive boards throughout Elementary School; our UK and US-based Foundation and Dual-Enrollment programs in addition to our AS/AL and AP programs in 11th–12th Grade; Preschool literacy and learning programs; and our new SENCo program for Special Educational Needs); and providing ALMA support for our advanced cloud-based student information system.

Take a look at our 1-minute recaps below, and follow us on Instagram – @ACAOneFamily for more exciting updates!

Back to School Nite #1: ELEMENTARY

Friday 16th September, 2022

Back to School Nite #2: PRE–, MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

Friday 23rd September, 2022

“What’s New?” on ACA’s Campus

NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL BUILDING/PROGRAM

The Middle School program consists of 6th-8th grade and offers a unique blend of U.S. and U.K. curricula. The rationale for the program include: integrated subjects to bridge the gap between Elementary and High School programs, increased instructional time for 6th grade students as they begin to learn IGCSE content, a more controlled number of subjects, and as school will close by 3:30 pm, students will be able to join High School clubs.

To accommodate this new program, we now have a brand new Middle School Block (complete with new classrooms) designed by one of our very own! Malik Melli, 2016 ACA graduate, moved on to study Architecture in Cyprus. He returned to Nigeria last semester and was employed to design and supervise the new extension, completed last week. Take a look at our new Middle School Building!

NEW CLASSROOMS

From brand new classrooms for our Middle & High School classes to some much needed reshuffling, upgrades and a fresh new look in our Preschool & Elementary classrooms, most of our students came back to an exciting and welcome change. With increasing accommodation for technology in our classrooms and within our school programs, we are especially eager to make use of our new ICT room and interactive boards in all our Elementary classrooms.

Our New Library

A quest to develop a reading culture, independent study habits, and much more…

A Word about Study Hall from our Study Hall Coordinator:

“Study hall at ACA is a quiet space that allows students to take a breath, consider their priorities, and make progress on their next-right-thing. This could include peer tutoring, homework, or simply taking a break from the long school day.”

Our New SENCo Room!

Our Special Educational Needs Room is definitely a universal favorite!

A Word from ACA’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo):

All students can thrive with access to the right support and educational provision. The Special Educational Needs (SEN) department, therefore, is a unit of the school that is specifically built to provide a safe and empathetic place for students to overcome their learning challenges.

This provision offers a wide range of support including individualized learning plans, one-on-one support and a SEN room that provides a comfortable environment for children to experience a sense of calm, practise self-regulation and improve focus. The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) oversees this unit.”

Class Features

“WELCOME to Our Classrooms!”

PRESCHOOL

Looks like it’s been lots of fun with COLORS all throughout Preschool this month! As our Nursery students had fun making patterns through building blocks of colors, sorting buttons by colors and learning the color “yellow”, our older Pre-KG students got creative drawing and coloring in their lovely artwork with their favorite colored crayons.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Just over 3 months ago, we saw our little Kindergarteners graduate to Elementary School! Time surely flies… Here’s a little “throwback” :’)

Now in 1st Grade, let’s take a look at what they’ve been up to…

We kicked off the school year with a fun little “Welcome to First Grade” photoshoot! “Ms. Funmi’s Firsties” got the special treatment as their teachers welcomed them with a handmade photo booth and frame. We’re all cheering you on and wishing you a wonderful Elementary School experience at ACA!

1ST GRADE

LITERACY: “I Pick ‘Just Right’ Books!”

We’re READY for Elementary School Literacy and we’re learning how to “go shopping” for books in our Library! Students learned to pick “good fit” books the way they pick “good fit” shoes.

1st Grade Library

Students learned to pick “good fit” books the way they pick “good fit” shoes.

SCIENCE: “Beans in a Cup” – Introduction to Scientific Investigations

Our First Graders are getting an early introduction to the process of a scientific investigation. They ask questions, make a prediction, plan and do a fair test, then record and analyze results. The investigation was determining which bean seeds will grow, cooked or uncooked bean seeds.

MATH: “Cubes” – Patterns

Students used cubes to make patterns, as they learned about ‘repeating’ and ‘growing’ patterns.

SCIENCE: “The Sandwich” – The Engineering Design Process

This served as an introduction to the Engineering Design process in Science. First, we designed a sandwich to solve the problem of hunger. We then analyzed it and redesigned a better sandwich using the results from the test of the first design. Here’s to our future creative STEM leaders, innovative thinkers and problem-solvers!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Our Middle Schoolers settled in to a brand new building and classrooms, as ACA launched it’s new Middle School program! We look forward to sharing more with you.

6TH GRADE: Science and Literacy

Here’s a first look into our new 6th Grade classroom, with our Middle schoolers hard at work in Science class. In English Literature, students worked in groups to create a paragraph: “Writing a Summary”.

7TH GRADE: Devotions

Our 7th Graders had fun hanging out in the music room for Devotions before moving to their new classrooms in the Middle School Block!

HIGH SCHOOL

Our student presentations are well underway in our 11th–12th Grade Entrepreneurship and Accounts classes. New students got an early start in the Chemistry Lab, as other 10th–12th Grade students took a trip to Lagos for the EducationUSA Fair for Universities.

CLUBS

From various Sports to Dance, and from Languages to Music; from Fashion Design, Arts & Crafts to Science Experiments, and from Etiquette to Cuisine, we’ve got your child’s extracurricular needs covered this year!

Our after-school clubs kicked off this week!

Stay tuned for more features in our next blog!

Meet ACA’s Class of 2022

Meet JEWEL Gbenga-Olajubutu, Class of 2022 Valedictorian and SBG Treasurer of ACA.

“I have always loved music and once considered a career in it. Now I want to become a medical doctor. It has been a wonderful experience going to ACA. I will miss you all so much. Never forget you can do anything you put your mind to. You can be anything you want to be. It only depends on you, your thoughts, your actions, your words, and your ability to see the bigger picture. Just take a step back and try to find the bright side.”

Meet ANGEL Sunilkumar, Student Body President, Class of 2022 Salutatorian, and an aspiring medical doctor.

“ACA is like my second home, and as I leave, I just want to tell you: NEVER give up, despite the obstacles thrown your way. People around you may tell you otherwise, but don’t listen to those noises. Instead, listen to your strong voice. Never let the fire of determination burn out of you. The key to success is hardwork, determination, and prayer. With these, success is surely yours.”

Meet CATHY Happi, “a very happy artist”, a lover of music, an environmentalist, and an aspiring fashion illustrator.

“Being in ACA for 14 years has been an amazing and life-changing experience. I have learnt that when things get tough, you just keep pushing, and I’m excited for what’s next. Au revoir et à bientôt!”

Meet KIMBERLY Oyebola, our fun and energetic SBG Secretary.

“I have always been told that I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me and I can do anything I want if I put the effort and time into it… It’s truly a blessing to be a part of the ACA family. I’ve met some lifelong friends whom I cherish with all my heart. In the future, I would like to become a nurse or an OB-GYN, and this fall, I am pleased to announce that I will be attending Penn State University in the United States majoring in Biology. With God on my side, along with my family and friends, I know everything will be a smooth journey for me.”

Meet OLAMIDE Ayoola-Popoola, aspiring basketball player, software developer and data analyst.

“One of the things ACA has taught me is that you should just live life the way it is, because it can’t be better than what it is already.”

Meet PUNEETH Kaki, our creative and logical tech-savvy ‘Businessman’.

“I am an adventurist and a try-it-all person. If you ever need to do something fun, I'm here. I'm a well versed musician, photographer, and aspiring computer engineer. My time at ACA has been memorable. Until next time folks!”

Meet SHALOM Obakin, our fun, spirited SBG Vice-President.

“…and ‘Grandma’ of the class. I am a dancer and a worshipper, aspiring Businesswoman and an Events Planner. I am a very passionate and creative person, and over my time at ACA, I have grown into more of who I was created to be. My time here has been very impactful. Until we meet again!”

4th Grade iPad Pilot Program

“iPads make learning FUN!” | “There are lots of educational activities to keep us occupied, even after lessons are over.” | “They help me interact with other students learning.” | “We can all learn something different at the same time!” | “They help me learn at my own pace.”

Those were just a few quotes from some of the 4th Grade students reflecting on the successful integration of iPads into their classroom this academic year. According to their teacher, Ms Ethel, the introduction of iPads in the classroom has been highly beneficial, with students learning more and at a faster pace, while remaining fully engaged. It makes learning easier, fun and more customizable. As a teacher, Apple Classrooms specifically has helped manage the classroom and every student’s activities and progress, as well as keep them safe and secure while online. Both students and teachers love the numerous apps and educational games that have helped enhance learning this past year, such as iBooks, Notability, Kahoot! Kids A–Z, etc.
